The term Metaverse is buzzing in the news, especially since Mark Zuckerberg has announced that he will change the name of his company to Meta; but what is metaverse?
In 1992, the term Metaverse was coined in the science fiction novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. In the book, the metaverse is a sum of virtual reality in which people can experience an interactive real environment.
An alternate name for the metaverse is a virtual universe where people use virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps, or other devices to play, work, shop, and meet. It basically means living your virtual life the same way you live your physical life.
Let’s take a look at how Metaverse will change the digital world.
1. Zoom calls and meetings
Instead of attending official Zoom call meetings with your colleagues and watching them on a grid platform, you can meet them in a physical representation of your office where each person looks like a digital version of themselves sitting at a digital table, digital coffee drinks and snacks drinks on digital donuts. Your Zoom meeting will become the same physical workspace where you used to go to work.
To meet someone on the other side of the world, you don’t have to pay for a flight or a hotel and spend several days just getting there. You can set up a Zoom meeting completely free of charge and use metaverse to have a 15-minute meeting with anyone around the world.
2. Play
The gaming industry has been working with interactive media for a long time, but the concept of Metaverse will also be new to them.
In the video game metaverse, the game’s protagonist can have a great time, make new friends, and briefly forget about the worries of his real life.
The potential of video games has not been recognized, as well as being a source of entertainment, they have a greater impact on human life. Video games can simulate real environments. Hence, today’s game publishers take full advantage of the Metaverse platform. Epic Games, publisher of Fortnite, is one of the companies that are working very hard to turn the video game universe into a metaverse. Battle Royale video games like Fortnite take center stage. In recent months, the video game has expanded to include concerts with some of the world’s greatest musicians, such as Travis Scott and Ariana Grande.
3. Digital shopping
We shopped online, but digital shopping will be a very different experience. You will first try on clothes digitally and then order them to arrive in the real world. You can have a glass of digital champagne in a Louis Vuitton showroom in London and try on their latest collection, then buy them and later get them in the real world.
We can also buy a car online with metaverse. According to Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic, he sees a future where an automaker trying to promote a new model will “be born their car in real time and you can drive it”.
4. Education
The education sector is one of the most important sectors that has been hit hard by Covid 19. This disruption has made online learning a crucial part of learning today.
Classes take place in a virtual room where students can run, sit, talk and play with one another in a computer-generated environment. Students will learn from the teachers through live sessions, just as teaching takes place in a physical world.
Rather than dissecting the animals and polluting the environment, in biology class, students will be able to dissect animals over and over without the cost (or smell) of a real pig or frog for deeper study, without the planet to harm.
Gain a deeper understanding of history by going back in time to WWI and WWII and traveling through it as a class as it was 100 years ago.
5. Virtual concert
In a virtual concert with Metaverse, a virtual avatar of the performer is projected onto the stage, which gives the feeling of a live concert. It will promote social connection as people have not been able to enjoy the concerts for a long time due to the pandemic. Even if each viewer sees the concert alone, they can communicate with each other in the shared virtual room of the concert or via live chat during the performance.
6. Digital art
Metaverse brings physical art to the digital arena. Digital artists, art collectors and lovers of this new field of art are served with it. By promoting and managing cryptographic NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) and artists, metaverse is helping to promote the digital art movement. Crypto coins are registered as NFTs and all properties are validated as NFTs.
Art exhibitions can now be digitized and the lives of people in marginalized communities around the world can be improved through the NFT companies.
7. Travel around the world
Metaverse offers customers the option to try it out before buying where travelers can experience a hotel or destination before making payment. So that you can actually decide for yourself whether you want it or not.
Remote and remote resorts that are not well explored by people because people don’t want to take any risks can convince themselves through virtual tours.
The majority of extravagant resorts and hotels are well above the average person’s budget, with virtual reality those who can’t afford luxury will get a chance to experience it. Even people who cannot travel to far away places due to illness or age can take part in a tour from the comfort of their own home.
8. Swim with the dolphins
If swimming with the dolphins was on your wish list; then your wish will soon come true. The Metaverse allows you to wear waterproof virtual reality glasses and float in the pool and watch dolphins play in virtual reality around you. The experience is so real that you could actually feel dolphins touch you and move around you.
There are endless possibilities with the Metaverse that we could never even think of taking shape. The virtual world will become so commonplace and natural that it will become the primary reality in which people experience their lives.
