Americans consider the pharmaceutical industry to be the least trustworthy industry, although their opinion of pharmaceutical companies has improved somewhat over the past year, according to recent research by the Public Affairs Council.
The annual report is based on data from a survey conducted among a national sample of 2,199 adults in the United States in September 2021.
Around 46% of respondents say that pharmaceutical companies are less trustworthy compared to other large companies, and only 13% think they are more trustworthy.
In addition, 40% of those surveyed believe that the pharmaceutical industry is underregulated and only 22% believe that it is overregulated.
These 2021 results represent a small ray of hope for pharmaceutical companies compared to 2020 results, when 49% of respondents said the industry was less trustworthy compared to other sectors and 47% said it was underregulated
About 86% of Americans surveyed say they generally agree with small businesses, compared with 53% who say they generally agree with large companies.
